Italian Pasta and Sausage Bake




This is a delicious pasta dish that can be served with hot crusty bread or rolls and a salad. Italian pasta and sausage bake is a mixture of cooked noodles in a Jarlsberg cheese sauce that's layered with Italian sausage, mushrooms and tomatoes. If you like good Italian pasta, you'll enjoy this recipe.


Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups wide egg noodles, cooked and drained
16 ounces bulk mild Italian sausage (without casing)
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped sweet red pepper
1 6 ounce can sliced mushrooms, drained
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 14 ounce can diced tomatoes
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup all purpose flour
2 1/2 cups milk
2 cups 8 oz shredded Jarlsberg cheese, divided
1 cup tomato sauce

Cooking Instructions:

In a large saucepan over medium heat, brown sausage, onion and red pepper, stirring to crumble sausage. Add mushrooms, salt and diced tomatoes. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt butter. Add flour and stir until smooth. Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Stir in milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbly. Stir in noodles and 1 cup of cheese. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place 1/2 of noodle mixture in a greased 2 1/2-quart casserole dish. Top with 1/2 of sausage mixture. Repeat layers. Top with tomato sauce. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and top with remaining 1 cup cheese. Bake 5 minutes. Ready for the table. Yields: 6 servings
