Safety Tips For Storing Ground Meat

Ground meats are highly perishable. Use the following safety tips to maintain the quality of ground meats and prevent illness:

Bring ground meat from the supermarket to your refrigerator at home as quickly as possible.

When handling ground meat, be sure that your hands and any utensils and surfaces that come into contact with the meat are clean.

Store ground meat in the refrigerator for no longer than 2 days; wrap the meat in plastic wrap and place a plate underneath it to catch any drippings.

For longer storage, wrap the ground meat in freezer-weight wrap or plastic bags and freeze. Frozen ground meat will keep for 2 to 3 months.

Thaw frozen meat wrapped, on a plate, in the refrigerator. Cook the meat as soon as it is thawed.

You can store leftovers made with cooked ground meat in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days or freeze them for up to 1 month.
