How to Core Lettuce Without Waste
Don't create waste when coring lettuce. Every time you try to core a head of iceberg lettuce, you're removing half the leaves, too. To isolate the core so you get the most lettuce possible, try the following: Hold the head above the counter with the heart facing down and bang briskly against the surface a couple of times. The core will pop out like a cork and you'll be left with an entire head of just leaves!
How to Thaw Frozen Ground Meat in Half the Time
Defrosting ground meat is such a pain: You either have to wait a day or two for the frozen hunk of meat to soften, or thaw it in the microwave, which results in a partially cooked mess. For a quicker way to thaw ground meat, place it in a freezer bag and press with a rolling pin until it's 1" thick. Then seal and stack the meat in the freezer. These scaled-down individual servings will defrost quickly. Plus, the thinner bags save space in the freezer!
